Kaupo Gap Trail Head Reviews Around the Web

  • Peter Swanzy · September 04, 2024

Good luck! Hahahahahaha! Head-high spikey brush for first half mile, difficult to find trail. Kamehameha schools and Kaupo ranch do not maintain. Steep and loose rocks, a really terrible trail! Very challenges, yet unmatched in terms of views and value! I REALLY WISH THEY WOULD MAINTAIN THIS TRAIL!

We walked Kaupo Trail from Paliku to Kaupo in November. The trail is great because it connects the crater with south coast of Maui and as such I would recommend it if you know that you are physicaly fit and don't mind a long and very bushy descent. It's actually pretty fine until aprox. last quarter of the trail. There is one marker right next to two irrigation pools that shows slightly to the left, which is fake! You are supposed to follow the road further down and only turn left and abandon the road at the following marker. Watch out for this. After the correct marker, the trail gets super bushy and as you approach Kaupo Ranch it is more and more overgrown and it really sucks. There was some flaging at the time, but it is probably not permanent and there is slight possibility of losing the trail. It helps a bit to have a gps log of the trail with you. We didn't get super lost and it was great to make it to Kaupo instead of going back to the crater summit and driving across half of the island to get there, so I recommend the trail as long as you know you are experienced and patient enough. The natural beauty surrounding the trail and the views are definitely worth the effort.

We walked from here up the mountain and man was it beautiful. This whole area - Kaupo I think is one of the most beautiful places in the whole world. The lush long grass, the forest, the wind and the sun. Would really recommend it.

We did sliding sands to the paliku cabin, camped there overnight the hiked down the kaupo gap trail in 5.5 hours. It was epic.

Not easy to reach, as the « road » to get there is not easy to access. I wouldn’t go there without an AWD SUV.
